7 Keys to Aging Well

It’s never too late to make good choices that will help you live a long and happy life. Aging well is possible if you take care of your body and mind, spend time with friends, help others, and do activities you love. Read up on our top tips for aging well.

  1. Watch your blood pressure. High blood pressure, or hypertension, can lead to many health problems, such as heart disease and stroke. High blood pressure is defined as 140/90 or higher. To keep your blood pressure in a good place, exercise as often as you can, try to keep your weight at a healthy level, and eat fewer salty and high-fat foods.
  2. Take care of your mental health. Staying positive, spending time with friends, and even trying a new hair or clothing style can boost your mood and self-confidence as you age. Work on letting go of old regrets and resentments. Write about your feelings or talk to someone about them. Forgive, and move forward.
  3. Be social. Spending time volunteering, tutoring, and helping those in need can take your mind off small problems and boost your mental health. Choose an activity you like, such as a book club, bridge, or gardening club, and get involved. Make an effort to stay in touch with old friends who know you well, and make new, younger friends too. Doing social activities can strengthen your immune system and make your body more resilient.
  4. Exercise. We know you’ve heard that exercise can make a big difference in health as you age. Pick something that you like to do, like walking, yoga, or swimming, and do a little each day. Exercise can improve mental acuity as you age, and relieve chronic conditions such as disease, depression, and arthritis.
  5. Get enough sleep. Even as you age, you still need to sleep for around 7 to 9 hours per night. Keep your bedroom dark, and develop a calming bedtime routine. Lack of sleep can lead to depression, weight gain, irritability, and risk of falls.
  6. Prevent falls. Check out your home and make any changes that are necessary to avoid risk of falls. You may need to remove obstacles or install grab bars or non-skid floors in certain areas. Wear comfortable, rubber-soled shoes, and make regular visits to your general practitioner and eye doctor.
